Children's Ministry

He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." Mark 9:36-31

Philosophy

As Members of the United Methodist Church, we uphold the rights of children and acknowledge that children are a sacred gift from God. In proclaiming that sacredness, we in the Church carry a commitment to enable all children to experience the fullness of life as Jesus proclaimed.

Children's Ministry Mission Statement

At L.U.M.C. we promise to surround these children with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their service to others. Our intention is to minister to the needs of all children and provide them with a caring community where all may be nurtured in a dignified and loving manner.

We welcome you to Lexington United Methodist Church (LUMC). Children are a valuable asset to our church family and make many contributions to the life of this church. Together with other children, youth, and adults we are learning and growing in our Christian faith.

At LUMC we offer many activities for children of all ages. It is our hope that this information will answer questions you might have about our programs.

General Information

Sunday School classes are available for children who are two years old through the fifth grade. All classes for children have at least two teachers. We follow the guidelines of the public schools for placement in our classes.

We provide training for anyone who is interested in becoming a member of our teaching ministry.

Sunday School begins at 9:45 and is the traditional Sunday School format. The curriculum used is material developed by the United Methodist Church for use in such classes.

Nursery

The nursery is staffed with paid and volunteer workers. The children are separated into two rooms-- one for infants, one for toddlers and two year olds. Each room is equipped with age-level appropriate furnishings.

Nurseries are provided for 8:30 and 11:00 AM Worship Services and the 9:45 AM Sunday School. Any other church wide activity will also have a nursery available to those who need this service.

Worship

Throughout the year children are encouraged to become involved in the worship services as acolytes, scripture readers, and special speakers.

In the fall the children participate in the a worship service entitled "Children's Sabbath." This is a time of heightening awareness of children beyond our community. During the winter months Worship Readiness classes are presented for second and third grade children.

In the spring all children help prepare and lead a worship service.

Children's Church

During the 11:00 AM worship service a children's moments sermon is offered. After the children’s moments, approximately 11:30, children who are in the four-year-old through second grade Sunday School classes may attend Children's Church. A Bible-based lesson and activity are part of this program. The lesson topic is included in the Children's Corner of the printed bulletin.

Wednesday Evening Fellowship

BREAKOUT (Fourth and Fifth Grade)

This encompasses the idea of the children moving from the children’s program to the youth program.  While they are still part of the children’s program at LUMC, they are breaking out into their own group meetings, following their own curriculum, and doing their own missions, in preparation for their transition into youth. BREAKOUT will meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:15 in room 209/210, upstairs. They also participate in several outings throughout the year such as ice cream socials, movie nights, bowling, progressive dinners, and a trip to a local theme park.

Preschool

A preschool program is available for children ages one through four. The hours are from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.   Click this link for more information about the Preschool Program.
